The Bastyr University Cancer Research Center (BUCRC) was established in February 1997 under the Bastyr University's Research Institute. BUCRC was initiated by funding from the 1988 Foundation, a subsidiary of the Lotte & John Hecht Memorial Foundation.

The mission of BUCRC is to screen, evaluate and develop natural medical therapies for the treatment and prevention of cancer.

The Bastyr University Cancer Research Program, led by Leanna J. Standish ND, PhD, LAc, is committed to ongoing research in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) cancer treatments. Collaborations with prominent local area conventional oncology research groups such as the Fred Hutchinson's Cancer Research Center (FHCRC) have been established. Since Bastyr University is trusted by the CAM cancer community to conduct unbiased, high quality research in alternative cancer treatments, future collaborations have been approached by various oncology clinics to develop future CAM cancer care to the public.

Bastyr University also facilitates the Tierney Basic Sciences Research Laboratory, a lab specializing in natural products analytical chemistry headed by Dr. Gowsala P. Sivam, PhD, a nationally recognized leader in pre-clinical oncology research. Bastyr University also has an excellent graduate program curriculum in CAM modalities especially pertinent to CAM oncology such as botanical medicine and nutritional medicine.
