Considering Enrolling in 2009? Talk to Us!
If you plan to enroll in a Bastyr degree program in fall 2009, take note. The priority deadline for applying to the Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND) program is February 1, and the priority deadline for all other programs is March 15. After those dates, applications are accepted on a space-available basis. To simplify the application process, we now offer online applications. Need more information before applying? Speak with an advisor by making a phone or an in-person appointment, visit our campus or attend one of our on-campus events. Learn About Bastyr's Programs at a Variety of Admissions Events
Good news! We're bringing you several great opportunities to learn more about Bastyr's programs, both on campus and at convenient off-campus locations. Choose which event suits you best, or drop by several.
- If you are in the local area, you can take advantage of two different on-campus events this month. "Bastyr Experience," a day-long introduction to the naturopathic medicine profession and to the University's program, takes place on Friday, November 21. At this event, you may observe classes, talk with faculty and students, and watch a medical-case presentation. Or, if you are interested in Bastyr's other programs — including acupuncture and Oriental medicine, exercise science and wellness, herbal sciences, health psychology, and nutrition — you can find out more about them at "Evening at Bastyr" on Thursday, November 20.
- Specifically seeking an undergraduate degree? You're in luck. Our undergraduate admissions advisors are hosting informational sessions at the Greenwood branch of the Seattle Public Library Wednesday, November 12 at 6 p.m., and at the West Seattle branch of the Seattle Public Library on Thursday, November 13 at 6 p.m. Find more details on these undergraduate events.
- If you live in Hawaii or just happen to be visiting Hawaii next week, join us for an "Evening with Bastyr" on Thursday, November 13, in Honolulu, Hawaii. This event provides a chance to talk to admissions advisors and practicing alumni about all of Bastyr's programs.
- Early 2009 presents two more opportunities for exploring Bastyr at our on-campus open houses. On January 23-24, 2009, the Naturopathic Medicine Open House provides a comprehensive introduction to the field of naturopathic medicine and Bastyr's world-renowned program. Also, mark your calendar for the All-Programs Open House, February 21. We will send you more details on that event soon.
Upcoming Classes and Events Provide a Taste of Bastyr
In addition to attending admission events, you can get a flavor for Bastyr at exciting on-campus events, including a number of unique classes and free health-related lectures open to the public.
- Bastyr, in collaboration with PCC Cooks, will again host a variety of cooking classes in our state-of-the-art nutrition kitchen.
- Learn more about the nature of happiness at "In Pursuit of Happiness,"an on-campus event at 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 12. Sponsored by Bastyr's Department of Counseling and Health Psychology, this free lecture includes a conversation on personal and cultural concepts of happiness, and an overview of recent research on the topic. Tiffany Reiss, PhD, chair of the Department of Exercise Science and Wellness, will give the presentation.
- Also on November 12, you can attend the second event in the year-long series, "The Politics of Health in America." That evening's panel discussion will focus on "Reforming Health: How do we communicate our message?"
- As part of our bookstore speakers series, we are proud to present a talk by Diana Noland, RN, MPH, CCN author of the book, The Textbook for Functional Medicine, on campus, Wednesday, November 12.
- And, as a special gift to you, we are offering a FREE special holiday musical celebration featuring the Breath of Aire choir. Join us on Friday, December 12 at 7 p.m. in our elegant and acoustically spectacular chapel for this festive event.
- In January, when the new year dawns and goal-setting begins, we offer a variety of interesting community education classes, including Craniosacral Therapy I, January 16-18; Chinese Sumi Painting, January 24; and Kitchen Medicine for Children, January 31. February 28 to March 1, we offer a popular class on animal communication, Your Animals are Talking: Are You Listening?

Spotlight on Our New Undergrad Admissions Advisor Mallory Emerson
We are happy to introduce the newest member of our admissions advising team, Mallory Emerson, who now works with our undergraduate programs. She comes from Binghamton University in New York, and upon arriving in Seattle sought a university environment where she could help students succeed. "I was eager to jump into a job where I could work one-on-one with students as they transitioned to the school," Emerson says. "The small, intimate setting of Bastyr made me excited to be a part of such a strong, supportive and healthy community." Read about Emerson's background and her advice for future students.
Highly Rated Financial Aid Department Helps Students Achieve Goals
Strategizing about how to pay for school can be a mystifying process. You don't have to do it alone. Talk to Bastyr University's director of financial aid, Carol Duke, and her staff if you're considering a Bastyr program. With 26 years of experience in administering financial aid, this department is one of the strongest at Bastyr University, evidenced by the fact that Bastyr students have ranked the financial aid office as the number one student service department for seven straight years. "Haunted Trails" Event Raises Funds for AOM Studies Abroad
The annual Bastyr spookfest, "Haunted Trails," had record attendance this year, with nearly 5,000 men, women and youngsters taking a terrifyingly fun tour through the haunted forests on Bastyr's campus. A new tour called Hades' Labyrinth — a 2,400 square-foot maze filled with ghouls, goblins and monsters — added to the frightful fun this year. Money raised by this event will fund students' overseas education in China (acupuncture and Oriental medicine), the Czech Republic Balneology Tour (naturopathic medicine), other approved study-abroad opportunities, or is applied to student tuition costs. New Student Profile: Health and Sports Enthusiast Cory Wiegers Pursues Exercise Science and Nutrition Degrees
Having always been an enthusiast of outdoors and extreme sports, Cory Wiegers naturally gravitated toward becoming a personal trainer. Unfortunately, he quickly became disillusioned by the industry. He decided to advance his career by obtaining a BS with a double major in exercise science and wellness and in nutrition at Bastyr University. His goal: to learn more about holistic health and wellness, and lay the groundwork for a graduate degree in physical therapy. Ultimately, he hopes to open his own health center that will be equal parts strength and conditioning gym, physical therapy clinic, wellness spa and health psychology consultancy. Faculty Q&A: Dean of Nutrition and Exercise Science Offers Advice to Future Nutritionists
Mark Kestin, dean of the School of Nutrition and Exercise Science, has seen Bastyr's nutrition program grow into a thriving program with an excellent nationwide reputation since he began teaching at Bastyr in 1996. With a PhD in nutrition and a Master of Public Health from Harvard University, Dr. Kestin has a wealth of experience in the field. We took the opportunity to sit down with him to seek advice for prospective nutrition and dietetics students. He offers helpful tips for anyone considering attending Bastyr. Students and Graduates Receive CAM Research Training Through NIH Grant
For those interested in conducting research, Bastyr University provides a number of valuable training opportunities. One example is the National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded T32 research training grant for predoctoral and postdoctoral students. Nutrition, acupuncture and naturopathic doctoral students and graduates may apply for summer predoctoral training positions and three-year postgraduate positions through this grant. The goal of the grant is to increase the number of research projects on topics related to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Past projects have included the effects of qi gong in diabetes management, and the medicinal actions of Reishi mushroom extracts on breast cancer.
