As a Bastyr University graduate and a naturopathic doctor, I love that I am able to integrate my passion for both nature and science. I think nature is very important in people’s health, and this perspective is really quite unique to naturopathic medicine and Bastyr. Because of my education, I had the chance to learn naturopathic medicine and to strengthen my research skills. Now I find new ways to treat diabetes and cardiovascular disease and conduct groundbreaking research. I am changing lives every day.

My education at Bastyr helped me realize that there is a whole continuum of medical treatments available, and it also confirmed that not everyone needs drugs to treat their health conditions. For me, naturopathic medicine is about the importance of letting patients know about alternative and complementary treatments that can assist them with their health. I have seen patients get so much better with naturopathic medicine. The improvements I’ve seen in patients with diabetes and cardiovascular disease are very striking, mostly because naturopathic interventions such as nutritional support, exercise regimens and botanical medicine are so effective for these conditions.

What I appreciate about being a naturopathic doctor is that I can sit with a patient for as long as I need to, talking not just about medications but also about their spirituality, their emotional health and their relationship with nature. Those are all important to me personally, and to be able to bring that into clinical work is a real honor.
